Boys the season is fast approaching and that means it's time for the annual season preview. This is how i think things stack up right now, and i cannot be more excited for the season to start and see how right/wrong i am. Let's go!
Western Conference
Northwest Division
1. Utah Jazz
GM: TJ Hatch | Projected Record: 12-2 | Off-Season Grade: B-
I'm going to go with the Utah Jazz as the best team in this division but it's tough. The Jazz have a lot of depth, but it's kinda sketchy depth no real super stars. Mike Conley and Eric Bledsoe are good, but are they guys that are going to lead you to a title or even a conference championship? I'm not convinced. I will admit that a lot of this ranking has to do with me trusting TJ with his team, he's gonna make a killer move sooner or later. I do think this year is a big year for him, he's talked a lot of talk, but if he comes up with two years and not even a finals appearance, i don't know if he can continue to make some of the claims he's made. The key i think really comes down to Rudy Gay and Nurk. Nurk really has what it takes be a dominant center and be someone that averages 35 or so a game. If he is able to put that all together this year and stay healthy it's enormous for TJ. A lot of people weren't sure what TJ was doing when he re-signed Rudy Gay to a 17 mill a year deal fresh off a torn achilles. I for one wasn't a big fan, but we'll get to see what Rudy has left this year. TJ needs him to be at least a good complementary player. Giving TJ the benefit of the doubt to finish first in a tough Northwest division.
2. Denver Nuggets
GM: Kevin Tucker | Projected Record: 10-4 | Off-Season Grade: B
These teams are really all pretty close, but with the depth of the Jazz i have them as slightly better. The Nuggets do have a really nice core group of guys, but with 1 mill in cap space and 3 roster spots, it's clear a move needs to be made in order for them to reach that next level. Word is circulating around Denver that Jimmy may be on the block for a 2-1 and i think that's the right move right now. The sucess of the Nuggets really in my mind comes down to the development of Elfird Payton, and Steven Adams. Steven really isn't in a great position to grow at least offensively, and if he was struggling to get looks with just Russ on the team, the additions of Melo and PG aren't gonna help. It should probably help spacing though giving him easier looks, and now that Russ will probably be done triple double chasing he should be able to grab more boards. Payton just really has to work on his jumper, he's a good defender and has nice vision, but to take that next step he's gotta put the ball in the bucket. Jimmy also probably doesn't get as many shots with Wiggy and KAT, but he's a stud regardless i wouldn't worry. The Nuggets season will come down to Kevin's ability to aquire depth. If he does, this team could be scary, and if he doesn't this team is still good, but it's not quite a contender. We'll see.
3. Portland Trailblazers
GM: Christian Breitenbach | Projected Record: 9-6 | Off-Season Grade: B
This might surprise some people but i like this Blazers team, and think the playoffs are a real possibility for them this year. Their best player is without a doubt Kemba Walker. He's made big strides the past two years, and i think is officially a star. Around Kemba the Blazers have a lot of nice pieces. Beal should be an all-star this year, i think Parsons is in for a bounce back year, Aminu is solid, KCP is a good piece, and Wiggy should take another step forward this year. I really think this is a dark horse team to challenge for a 4-6 seed. I think Markkannen is sneaky. The Bulls will have every single reason in the world to give him minutes and develop him. I can see him being a little soft, but he really did impress this summer in the Euros and in Summer league. Watch out for this Blazers team.
4. Minnesota Timberwolves
GM: Matthew : Projected Record 7-7 : Off-season Grade: B-
This team is pretty slept on. They boast one of the best if not the best big three in the whole league. AD, Lillard, and Hayward is flat out filthy. The problem, much like Nuggets is the people around the studs of the team. In this case, the Twolves have 3 real studs and nothing much around them. Kilpatrick has shown some flashes, but i don't think he will start even on the Nets. Abrines is a good shooter, but i can't see him even averaging double digits. Exum has some potential, but i think it's safe to say he's a rotation guy. Henson is a guy i like as a supporting cast member, but when he's your best supporting player it's a problem. This team is gonna win games because of their big three, but if one of them goes down things could go south fast. I like this team think they'll win some games, but they're not a contender at this stage, and might flirt with the 7th and 8th seed.
5. Oklahoma City Thunder
GM: Loren Colpo | Projected Record: 6-8 | Off-season Grade: C+
I'm honestly not trying to shit on Lor. He has a decent team, but this division is just pretty tough. Again Loren's in this weird mediocre mode. Like he's not gonna be bad he has nice pieces. Morris, Hill, Gordon, Iggy, Dieng. All guys that can contribute to winning teams, but together they're just not good enough. I'm looking for Loren to get some sense of direction this year. Whether it be blowing it up and trading for young pieces and draft picks, or really adding a couple pieces to this core so that he can at least be a 4-5 seed. Right now he's probably the 8-10th best team in the West. I still love him though.
Odds to win the division:
Utah Jazz: -150
Denver Nuggets: +250
Portland Trailblazers: +500
Minnesota Timberwolves: +800
Oklahoma City Thunder: +4000
Pacific Division
1. Golden State Warriors
GM: Caleb Plasschaert | Projected Record 13-1 | Off-Season Grade: A
I'm gonna keep this short because it's me and nobody really gives a shit. But i really do like my squad this year, i could stand to add some depth, but Steph, Simmons, and Gobert will pave the way. Really don't sleep on Ben, the kid is going to have a monster year, and the scary thing is this is the worst he will ever be.
2. Sacramento Kings
GM: David Espinola | Projected Record: 12-2 | Off-Season Grade: A
The reigning Western Conference champs have another stacked team and should be ready for another title run. The key thing with the Kings is their depth. Dragic, Beverly, BG, Marc Gasol, MKG, Booker, and even the rook Kuzma are all gonna be contributors this year. But there will be some interesting developments that will be key to the Kings. Gasol will be Gasol, but it will be interestng to see how Blake adjusts to no CP3 i can see in with a surge of production because the offense running through him, but i can all see him not getting the same amount of looks. It'll also be interesting to see where Beverly ends up. Teodosic, Rivers, and Lou Will are all solid, but i still think theres a good chance Bev gets close to 30 minutes a game. Lastly MKG is largley important. I really think he has what it takes to be a 25-30 point scorer but he has to take that next level jump. Batum being out is gonna open up even more minutes, so the opportunity really is there. The Kings should be in the mix for both a conference and league title.
3. LA Clippers
GM: Trey Remson | Projected Record: 7-7 | Off-Season Grade: B+
Will this be the year Trey makes the playoffs?! I sure hope so. He's got two absolute studs in James Harden and Hassan Whiteside. The goal now is to improve the supporting cast. The Clippers have some guys like Jamaal, Ariza, and Snell but no real real contributors outside of the previously mentioned stars. That should be the goal for Trey moving forward, acquiring that depth. I'm not sure how he's gonna do it, but it'll be interesting to see. As of now i'm not sure i see Trey in the playoffs i think it's definitely possible, but he is going to have to be very shrewd moving forward. Monitoring players in free agency and maybe taking expiring contracts on who can contribute. It's possible, and i'd 100% love to see a Trey led team in the playoffs, but he's gonna have to work for it.
4. Phoenix Suns
GM: Terrence Richard | Projected Record 5-9 | Off-Season Grade: B+
The new Phoenix management definitely know what they're doing. And i'm confident a Phoenix Suns rebuild is in good hands. I think the key for them is finding that star to build around. Dennis Schroeder is a good start, i think the young German point guard has a ton of talent, and can be an above average point guard in the league for years to come. Klay Thompson is a premier shooting guard in this league and another guy the Suns can count on in the coming years. Monk and Frank really interest me. I think both have a ton of potential but both have a lot of work to do before being considered true building blocks. And while the Suns may not be a playoff team this year it's clear this team is headed in the right direction. This will be a fun team to keep tabs on and if all goes well the Suns should be a playoff team in 2019.
5. LA Lakers
GM: Griffin Lay | Projected Record 2-12 | Off-Season Grade: B-
The Lakers slot in as fifth in the division, and i'm sure they're 100% okay with this. It took a little while last year, but it's clear that the Lakers are in full rebuild mode. They have their building block in Embiid, and will have to pray he stays healthy. Prince, Dunn, and Chriss are all fun guys to monitor this season well. So hey yeah this Lakers team is bad, but it has some fun pieces, and some players that really can take big steps in their development this year. Word on the street is GM Griffin Lay is in love with Luka Donic so the draft this coming year should be fun. Good things are coming eventually for this Lakers team.
Odds to win the Division:
Golden State Warriors: -200
Sacramento Kings: +275
LA Clippers: +1500
Phoenix Suns: +4000
LA Lakers: +100000
Southwest
1. Memphis Grizzlies
GM: Luke Elmore | Projected Record: 12-2 | Off-Season Grade: A-
I think Memphis is the clear #1 team in the division and i know Luke will continue to look to make moves. CP3, PG, and Dbook are a sick little trio. I'm sure going to Houston will only help CP3 scoring, sure he'll share the rock a little bit more, but that uptempo offense is gonna be real fun for him. This is a huge season for Dbook this is where he has to take that next step into budding stardom. He's a stud and i believe in him, but in this league it's even harder for SGs, will be real fun to see his improvement this year. PG is also a real interesting case. Russ can't be the easiest guy to play with and we'll see how that whole thing shakes out. Outside of the big three the Grizz still have solid depth. ZBO can still ball, Joe Johnson is ageless, and i really think Favors is in for a bounce back year. I see another really good season on the horizon for the Grizzlies. This team is is likely a 1-3 seed with a title on their minds.
2. Dallas Mavericks
GM: Royce Li | Projected Record: 9-5 | Off-Season Grade: A
I wasn't sure who i had at 2 in the division Spurs or Mavs, but Batum's injury just solidifies it. Landon has built a team that is ready to win now. The obvious strength in this team lies in it's star power. The Mavs have what may be the best duo in the game in Lebron James and Kevin Durant. I don't want to say Lebron's window is closing, because the guy just defies the laws of aging, but he should be in for a decline at least in the next couple years. The time is now for the Mavs. Besides this the Mavs have 8 expiring contracts. The key with this team is going to be how well the supporting cast plays. Dirk, Lou Williams, Wes Matthews, and Manu are all going to have to play key roles on this team for it to compete with the big dogs. This team alone as is, is probably a 5th or 6th seed, which is a large improvement from last year. But the oppurtunity is there to make a run, it's just going to come down to the moves Landon makes. Gonna be interesting to see if the Mavs can make a run for a division title on the backs of his two superstars.
3. San Antonio Spurs
GM: Chris Jacobson | Projected Record: 8-6 | Off-Season Grade: B
I've got the Spurs coming in third in the Southwest with the injury to Batum. This is a very solid team, make no mistake about it. And i honestly have no doubt Chris gets his boys to the playoffs for what'll be like the 30th straight season. The key this year i think is JV. WIll he take that next step? Will Casey even allow him too? I really want JV to go somewhere he can thrive, because i think he is very very talented. Capela is a stud and should benefit from the continued free flow of Houston's offense and two great playmakers in James and Cp3. Kent should have every opportunity to have a big role in ATL, and it really is up to him this year to see if he can take that leap from pretty good, but not great player a player we view as a key piece. And you know what you're going to get from guys like Monroe and Thad. Again this is a solid, but not great team. You can bet your bank account Chris will have this team in the playoffs, but not this team can go further than maybe even a round. It'll be interesting to see what direction the Spurs go in as the season begins.
4. New Orleans Pelicans
GM: Alexandrops Vassiliadis | Projected Record: 4-10 | Off-Season Grade: A-
Ah one of the most active owners in the league has done a great job setting up his Pelicans for the future. This team should be a championship contender within the next 3 years if he plays his cards right. The team is loaded with draft picks over the next couple years and already has some very good pieces. Russ is obviously a fantasy stud and while his numbers might take a light dip because of who he is playing with, he's still ging to put up great numbers. Winslow is another guy i really like long term. Outside of that Pelicans has a number of young guys he just has to wait on. I think some of them will turn out to be average, but i think there are some of his guys that could turn out to be real good players in this league, it'll just be a waiting game. But really, if Pelicans wants to this is a title team next year, i'm not joking. As of now this team is probably 10th or 11th best in the West. Some fun young pieces on this team, and it'll fun to see them develop this year.
5. Houston Rockets
GM: Mikey | Projected Record 4-10 | Off-Season Grade: B+ (with new owner)
I love how new management has come right away with a plan, and is putting that into practice. Really liked the Demarcus trade for Houston they get a stud, and RHJ who i think has a real chance to carve out a significant role this year. I know most won't like their most recent trade, but Deyonta has a lot of potential and he's looked like a real player this pre-season. Now the Rockets will just have to continue the rebuild and ake the right steps towards being a winner in the future. IT'll be interesting to see how Kennard looks, as i think he is in a real spot to get some minutes this year. And i'll be curious to see what the Rockets get in return for Barnes and Rondo as i doubt both are in their plans right now. A lot of potential with this team, the Rockets just have to play their cards right. This team honestly isn't that bad right now, but it's clear they're looking to rebuild so while owning their own first i think the Rockets find a way to come in last, and continue on the path of rebuilding.
Odds to win the Division:
Memphis Grizzlies: -350
Dallas Mavericks: +400
SA Spurs: +650
New Orleans Pelicans: +2600
Houston Rockets: +33000
Eastern Conference
Atlantic
1. New York Knicks
GM: Tyler Hampton | Projected Record: 12-2 | Off-Season Grade: A-
The defending champs shouldn't have too much trouble winning their division this year. Obviously it'll come down to injuries, but the Knicks have a stacked returning squad. John Wall is a top 10 fantasy player and should lead the charge for the Knicks all year. Jrue and Khris Middleton will also play huge roles in helping the Knicks get back to where they were last year. There are some interesting players that will have a lot of say in how far this team goes. The first being TJ Warren. Warren is another one of those players who has to take that leap this year. He's looked really good in pre-season and should be the most comfortable he's been his whole career this year. The Knicks would love a career year from him. The next is Marcus Morris. With the move to Boston it'll be interesting to see how he fits in, and if he'll be able to be a fantasy contributor this year. Lastly, i'm looking at vegan Jah. He looked really good in the first pre-season game but i'm gonna have to see a lot more than looking good in one game before im convinced he's a contributor. I think the Knicks are in a very good spot to win the division but possibly also win the conference. John Wall is the guy to do it, and the depth is there it'll just come down to injuries.
2. Philadelphia 76ers
GM: Chris Lee | Projected Record 11-3 | Off-Season Grade: A-
Don't sleep on this team. This team could make a run, and i'm not talking just a run to the playoffs i can see this team going deep if some things work out. It all starts with KAT. KAT is an absolute stud, who can be a top 5 fantasy player this year if everything falls into place. He will be this team's leader. When you look at the supporting cast it's honestly pretty deep. I like Dlo to bounce back this year, he's got the perfect oppurtunity in BKN he just has to seize it. Seth Curry has carved out a nice role in DAL. Derozan is a SG stud. It'll be really interesting to see where Melo's value is this year. He's probably not gonna get the same amoun of shots as he had in NYK, but he's most likely going to be more motivated and be getting better looks. Hood, Gibson, Reke aren't slouches either. Honestly i can see the 6ers upsetting the Knicks for the division if the Knicks have any kind of slip up. Watch out for Philly!
3. Toronto Raptors
GM: Kendrick Perkins | Projected Record: 9-5 | Off-Season Grade: B-
Slightly confused on the direction of the Raps, but this is a good team. The Raps have took a more team approach to filling out this roster, and the team has a ton of depth. Gallo, Bradley, Smart, Rivers, Brown, Hernangomez, and Bis are all going to get solid minutes this year. Again i think you need a little bit more star power to be considered a true contender, but teams with this build have made deep runs before. Again i'm not sure if the Raptors are looking to go all in, or if its more of a be competitive and build little by little each year. Either way this team is deep and should have no issue making the playoffs. If this team were to acquire a star things could get real interesting in the Atlantic. This is a loaded division, and the Rap will be fun to watch.
4. Boston Celtics
GM: Jacob Stevens | Projected Record: 4-10 | Off-Season Grade: A-
Yacob's Celtics slot in at #4 in the division. This team is built for the future, and should be title contenders in 3 years i wanna say? Draymond is a stud and really there isn't much you need to say about him. He'll be at anywhere from 35-40 a game. The key this year is see how Fultz and Jackson develop. I love both and think both have the potential to be stars, but it's important that both get run and a chance to develop. Outside of those three i'll be looking at JaMychael Green and Milos Teodosic. The Celtics paid a good amount for Green this off-season and they'll really wanna see the returns this year. I like Green but am still not sure he's worth 15 mill annually. Teodosic has looked awesome this season, and with Rivers out early on i could see him taking on 25 min a game and being a real producer and someone Yacob is able to deal towards the end for a piece or two. Again this Celtics team isn't looking to compete this year, but this is a team that will be scary in a couple years.
5. Brooklyn Nets
GM: Calum Aldridge | Projected Record: 3-11 | Off-Season Grade: B
I like the rebuild job the Nets have done. They have a lot of good young pieces, and we'll have to see if the Nets just wait on their young prospects or are aggressive in deals to try and improve their team. Aaron Gordon, Dejounte Murray, and Caris Levert are who im looking at most in terms of improvement. All three are immensely talented and have the chance to be stars or well above average players in this league. The Jabari injury was such a bummer last year as it looked he was pretty to emerge as a star and lead this Nets team with Aaron Gordon. Really that's what this year is about. There are so many fun young players on this team and this year is about seeing which players can emerge as key building blocks. I know i say this a lot but it's really true this team can contend for a title in 2-3 years if the right moves are made. It speaks to the depth of this league, and the talent on every roster. This team won't be winning any titles this year, but this is a fun young team, that has some of the highest potential in the league.
Odds to win the division:
New York Knicks: -180
Philadelphia 76ers: +220
Toronto Raptors: +450
Boston Celtics: +2000
Brooklyn Nets: +4500
Central Division
1. Detroit Pistons
GM: Mervyn Mok | Projected Record: 12-2 | Off-Season Grade: A-
This might come as a surprise to some, but i like the Pistons to win this division. I think they have the best combo of star power and depth. The team is obviously led by Kawhi Leonard. The guy is a stud and is only going to get better. The big thing with him is obviously health. His sidekick Kevin Love i think should be in for a big year. On a team with a ton of change Love will be that steady presence and i really think he's in for a 20/10 year with ease. Outside of the two stars the Pistons have some decent depth. Brook is as fragile as they come but is in a good spot to produce in an up tempo LA offense with a pass first point guard in Lonzo. Lavine, Collison, and Bojan should all be sneaky contributors this year as well. I really like this Pistons team and think they could even finish 1st in the East. This division is tough at the top but i think the mix of depth and star power the Pistons have will be enough to put them over the top.
2. Milwaukee Bucks
GM: Jacob Stalsberg | Projected Record: 11-3 | Off-Season Grade: B+
I've got he Bucks slightly edging the Bulls. (Sorry Chuck) What it comes down to is JAcoby having two megastuds in Zinger and Giannis. We all know what Giannis can do and should be even better with another year under his belt, if he can lead this Bucks team to another top seed, i can see him even winning our league MVP. I think the big thing for me here is Porzingis. I think the guy is going to have a monster year. He's had a year udner Hornaceck and the offense and team should be built around him. No more Melo and Drose Isos, it's Zinger time in New York. Outside of these two there isn't a ton of depth. I'm honestly not quite sure what Crowder's role is going to be in Cleveland. Tyler Johnson is in a somewhat crowded Heat backcourt, will Plumlee play enough minutes off the bench in Denver? Theres a lot that we'll have to find out about this Bucks team when the season starts. One player who has really impressed me over the years is Gary Harris and i think he'll take a nice big jump this year. He came in not being able to shoot at all, and has worked and worked and worked. I still think i like the Pistons to win the division, but this team has the higher ceiling because of the stardom at the top. Will be awesome to see the Bucks, Pistons, and Bulls battle it out all year.
3. Chicago Bulls
GM: Charlie Zettek | Projected Record: 10-4 | Off-Season Grade: B-
After what 7 years? Charlie still does not have a title to brag about. Not sure this will be the year either. Don't get me wrong Charlie has a nice team. CJ and Teague are good players, but Horford is as soft as tissue paper and i'm not sure Covington and Tobias will be enough to really push this team over the edge. The strength is the depth. CJ, Horford, Tobias, Covington, and Teague is a nice little five man core, but Charlie definitely needs to build off that if he wants be a real contender. I'm sure he knows this. One guy i do like as a sneaky sleeper in Jsutin Holiday. He's not the greatest player, but he's a good shoter, and is really starting to find his way in the league. On a depleted Bulls team he should get a chance to make a nice little role for himself. The Bulls are a good team, not a great team, but i know Charlie knows how to be a great team, so i'm not gonna rule him out of a title chance just yet. He's got work to do though.
4. Cleveland Cavaliers
GM: Jon Black | Projected Record: 5-9 | Off-Season Grade: A
The Cavs don't get a ton of attention in here because their owner isn't on chat much, but the Cavs i'd say are a top 3 team in the league in terms of being set for the future. They have two studs in Kyrie and Jokic, their draft picks still loaded up, tons of cap space, and young players like Buddy Hield and Jamal Murray who are in key poitns in their career. The big thing for Cavs this year, like many others who are rebuilding is the development of Murray and Hield. Murray should have every oppurtunity to become a starter for the Nuggets this year. I'm still not sure he can be an elite guard in the NBA just because of his lack of athletiscm and passing, but we'll see. Buddy will be playing in an uptempo and young Kings team and really needs to take that step this year. He's got a ton of talent but he's gotta show hes more than just a shooter. Outside of those this will be a good year to look at Baldwin, Leaf, Holmes, and Poetl. If even two of them can step up this year, the Cavs could be in the playoffs as soon as next year. I really like how this team is set up and they'll be a fun team to monitor this year.
Indiana Pacers
GM: Jon Ho | Projected Record: 4-10 | Off-Season Grade: C+
I love Jonny boy, but his team defnitely needs some work. His best player is Adre Drummond, and i'm not sure i'd be willing to pay what he's paying him. Either way Drummond's an elite re bounder and hopefully for the Pacers will take strides in his effort and ability to score the ball this year. Outside of Drummond there are some nice pieces on this team. Dennis Smith is one of the most exciting young rookies in the game, and it looks like he'll be able to get a lot of run right from the start. I think it'll be a process with Smith, but in 2-3 years the kid should be a star. I also like Noel but again at that price i'm just not sure. Hernangomez has shown some promise, and even though Denver has a pretty loaded rotation right now i think he's shown enough promise to get Jon excited. Jon has some things to work out, his team isn't bad at all, but the money issues just really put a cap on what he can do. I think the Pacers goal this year has to be to work out their money issues so that they have flexbility moving forward. Still a lot of potential for this Pacers team if they sort that issue out.
Odds to win the Division:
Detroit Pistons: -110
Milwaukee Bucks:+120
Chicago Bulls: +200
Cleveland Cavs: +1500
Indiana Pacers: +25000
Southwest Conference
1. Washington Wizards
GM: Octstuff | Projected Record: 11-3 | Off-Season Grade: B+
I think this is the most open division. The Wizards are the clear favorite even with Isaiah Thomas hurt. Isiah Thomas is also a very interesting case. He's a scorer and should be able to score whereever he goes but with Lebron, Wade, Loves, JR Crowder all having played toghether for half a year before Isaiah even shoots his first shot as a Cav it'll be interesting to see where his production is when he comes back, i'm not too worried though. I think a big sleeper this year is Paul Millsap i think he's a perfect fit next to Jokic and should have a really awesome year. He's gonna get good looks, the ability to pass to guys who can score, and get good looks as well. Dwight Howard in Charolette will be interesting. He should be right around the production he was at last year which is not bad at all. Reggie Jackson is going to be key for how far this team this goes. I'm not the biggest fan, but if he's healthy and getting minutes he's a solid contributor. I like this Wizards team and the division should easily be theirs, but i'm not sure i have them in the championship conversation yet.
2. Orlando Magic
GM: Perry Petruccelli | Projected Record: 9-5 | Off-Season Grade: A
The Magic had a really nice off season and i like the foundation of this team. Turner is a great center piece to build off of, and guys like Tatum and Isaac have a ton of potential and could be right behind Turner if all goes well. Despite this team being built for the future i think this team could surprise some people this year. Kanter, Forunier, Mills, Harkless, Jospeh, and Ryan Anderson are all very viable options. If the Wizards falter a little but out of the gate dont be surprised if the Magic make a little run. It just is going to come down to Cojo's role in Indy, Anderson getting on track in Houston, and Fouriner's improvement. If all goes well this is a 5-8 seed, if not the Magic will be fine and will be a team that will be looking to make a playoff run in the coming years.
3. Atlanta Hawks
GM: Connor Thax | Projected Record: 7-7 | Off-Season Grade: C
It really is sad John is gone. He would always find away to get his squad deep in the playoffs despite how shitty his squad looked on paper. This new Hawks owner has a lot to live up to, but there are pieces here. Like some other teams, i'm somewhat confused on the direction. I don't think the Hawks have quite enough to compete, but they do have two really nice pieces. Lowry and DJ are studs who will put up numbers this year. But the window is small for the Hawks as i can't see Lowry playing at this level for too much longer. Aldridge really did not look good to me at all, i have faith in Pop that he will do everything to get him back, but at that age and contract, the Hawks really need to decide if they are giving it a shot this year or calling it and building for the future. This team isn't bad ad a playoff birth would't surprise me, but i can't see it being more than a 7th or 8th seed.
4. Charlotte Hornets
GM: Kennan Hazletine | Projected Record: 4-10 | Off-Season Grade: A
The Hornets are another team that i think is built very very well. Lonzo and Ingram are obviously the two center pieces of this team and i think have the chance to be stars. It'll a really fun year for Charlotte in seeing the progress Ingram has made and to see just how ready Lonzo is. John Collins was an awesome pick and he should be given every opportunity to succeed in Atlanta. Two other guys i wouldn't sleep on are Bender and Mudiay. Mudiay obviously still has plenty of work to do, but i don't think the Nuggets have given up on him and Hornets shouldn't too. I think theres a chance he gets back into the rotation this year and becomes relevant. I'm also a big Bender fan. Not sure if he'll work out, but he has the tools to be a star and i'm the Horne sure ts are excited to watch him try and take that next step this year. The Hornets aren't a playoff team even in the East, but they're fun. Expect to see big things from the Hornets in the coming seasons.
5. Miami Heat
GM: Sanjul Sharma | Projected Record 2-12 | Off-Season Grade: B
I have the Heat coming 5th in the division but there are some bright spots on this team. The first being Deaaron Fox. The kid has star written all over him. Outside of just the talent he has the personality and there is little doubt in my mind that Fox becomes the Heat's franchise player over the next couple years. Outside of Fox there are some fun pieces. Maker and Ellenson both have potential and this will be a big year for both in taking the next step. The Heat really did have a nice draft as i love Bell as an undersized defender who will become a dog under Dray's tutelage. Swanny has looked really good this pre-season and should be able to get minutes with the Blazers. It will be a long year in Miami this year, but Bryan's okay with that, the big thing is seeing strides in the young players.
Odds to win the Division:

Washington Wizards: -350
Orlando Magic: +300
Atlanta Hawks: +900
Charolette Hornets: +2000
Miami Heat: +5000
