Lonzo Ball might be the best college basketball point guard in this decade. His impact on UCLA is historic and should not be overlooked. He made TJ Leaf a fucking top 20 pick. Without Lonzo Ball, i'm willing to bet we never hear Ike Anigbogu's name unless you watch PAC-12 religiously. 6'10 center, poor fundamentals, no footwork, fouls too much, can't switch onto 4's let alone hedge an NBA point guard on a pnr, hard hands, makes DeAndre Jordan's post game look like Karl Malone, and wouldn't even be that good of a prospect in 2007. Hopefully Ike Anigbogu at least buys Lonzo dinner. Lebron is the only teenager i've seen that makes his teammates better than Lonzo does, so why did a kid from Washington who's only question mark is Lonzo's greatest strength...go ahead of Lonzo? Because Lonzo's entire skill set is a catch-22. His game is like Capitalism, it's very design cannibalizes itself. His strengths make his weaknesses worse, and his weaknesses eventually make his super powers into merely above-average-tools-in-the-right-setting. Lonzo makes an average player pretty good, but the catch 22 yet again is he needs the right kind of players and system in which he can make them better. Basically you have to build around Lonzo, you can't just plug him into any lineup and expect him to even look like a professional basketball player. His skill set requires very specific pieces in order to be activated.
He is the most unique player that's been this highly touted that I ever remember, but sadly it seems like the "why" in his brilliance is often misunderstood. Lonzo's father is perhaps the biggest egomaniac in public view atm, yet he's who instilled the unselfishness and instinctual preternatural ability to enhance the effectiveness of those around Lonzo. Without Lavar, Lonzo is just another 6'6 NBA prospect who can handle the ball. Without LaVar's egotistical mission to vicariously live his dream of an NBA career out through his sons, Lonzo wouldn't be the best team player we've seen drafted in years. You might find Lavar annoying, you might find Lonzo and LaMelo to be more flash than substance and you might even be right, but i'm past that shit....i'm all in on the Big Baller Brand. This shit is going to be a blast to watch because no matter what happens, it's going to be fucking fascinating.
He is literally a living, breathing contradiction.
