The Nuggets didn't have a bad year. 9-5 and winning a playoff series really is nothing to be ashamed of. The Nuggets were ravaged by injuries. Durant, Barton, Mahinmi, JR, Collison, and Favors all missed significant time. And now i'm hearing from multiple sources across the league that Durant is very much on the block in Denver. How quickly do things change. The thing is i think is the right move for Denver. Drafting Mahinmi was not a good choice, i think that's been proven, but after re-signing KD the Nuggets are sitting at 2 mill in cap space with only 9 players under contract. They had to cut JR in order to re-sign and to be honest are just not in a position to compete right now. Adams didn't quite take the steps i think the Nuggets wanted and will make 22 million next year. Barton and Favors are both set to be free agents next year, and so i really think the time to strike is now. KD is a transcendent talent, but in this league you need the depth and supporting cast around your star/stars to win a title. So as much as Nugget fans may hate to hear it, the window to move one of the most offensively talented players this world has ever seen may be now.
GM Kevin Tucker knows this and has been on the phone 24/7 with different owners around the league. Many different rumors are swirling, but one of the ones i think has the most substance is a potential deal between the Nuggets and the Pelicans. The Nuggets obviously have a ton of interest in picks 2 and 5, but also like guys like Bobby Portis and Josh Richardson. Nothing is even close to being imminent, but i can tell you there have been talks, along with interest on both sides. This really does have the potential to turn into a KD sweepstakes type of thing. I believe GM Kevin Tucker is at a crossroads right now for his franchise, and he really is the only one that control what happens. This is will be a very interesting situation to monitor and one we will continue to update as the draft draws closer.
