San Antonio Spurs vs. Utah Jazz
The schedule was completely randomly generated and i love how it gave us a TJ Chris week one match up. There are so many story lines we can look at heading into this one. Chris and TJ run their teams in completely different ways. Chris can't be on chat as often as TJ and likes to make prudent well thought out trades, sneaky free agent pick ups. He likes to pick players in the draft and hold onto them and let them develop. TJ is quite different, he's not very patient and will trade picks at will for short term gain, he has his go to owner he likes to work and try to work trades that are well in his favor but just out of range to veto. Both are effective, but both are very different. This type of league is going to favor Chris' style because of how much harder it is to trade. Both teams are basically the teams they drafted, besides TJ dealing 4 future picks for Josh Richardson and Norm Powell. Unfortunately for Chris those two may be the difference this week, as before that these two teams were very very close on paper.
If Chris wins this game a lot of it is probably gonna be attributed to Kyle Anderson. With Danny Green being out Anderson is going to be thrust into the starting lineup and should be able to put up 20 or so a game, something that probably wouldn't be happening if Green were healthy. Anderson can be huge for Chris this week. Sullinger being out really hurts Chris in this one. Sully seemed to have lost a lot of weight and was ready to be locked into a nice role next to JV in Toronto. Him being out is atleast a 40-50 point loss for him this week. Like Anderson Joe Johnson will have an increased work load this week. With Hayward out he should most likely start, and do a little more lifting on offense this week. I still am not sure if Anderson and Johnson gaining slightly larger roles this week mitigates the loss of Sully, but we'll see. Bazemore, Rubio, and Monroe are Spurs 3 most important players. When all three are at their best they are all very very good players, but they are also players that can be prone to lower floor games. On top of that, neither of three play a particularly large amount of games this week. The Spurs have a very solid team, but i think will be up against it slightly this week.
TJ greatly upgraded his team a week ago with bringing in J-Rich and Powell. Neither are studs, especially in this league but having two more guys that play and can contribute is huge in this new look league. Looking through his team he really only has one stud in my mind, and that is Gobert. Gobert has gotten better every year, and in this league, he really i the perfect center. Conley i think is actually in for a bounce back year. He's got a new coach, and yes a new fat contract, but i think he's the type of guy that will want to go out and prove he deserves the cash. CJ is another very solid player, but as a shooting guard, he's just not gonna be able to consistently have huge nights like Gobert. TJ is just in a better position this week because he has slightly better depth, and most of his players aren't just role players but focal points on their team. One thing i could see effecting TJ is again, his guys are more boom or bust. Yes Dirk and Tristan play solid minutes night in and out but their floor's are pretty low despite their different styles. CJ and Gay are guys who if they drop duds you wouldn't be surprised, and the same can be said for Powell and J-Rich. Again Tj's team is very talented but i think there will be weeks where the team absolutely shits the bed, and he may need to make moves to be a more consistent team.
Prediction: TJ and the Utah Jazz come out barely victorious. Both teams have good showings, but Sully being hurt comes back to bite Chris in the ass. Both will be set for playoff runs, and this very well could be a playoff match up down the road. Let the year begin boys!
